Proposal A

Key Action I, Action Line I.6.2.: Systems for intelligent vehicles

Project title:
Using the existing electrical network in an automobile for non-time-critical
electronic control- and steering functions

Objective:	Develop, validate and demonstrate automobile on-board systems for
efficient dual use of the existing electrical wiring (energy supply &
electronic data transmission)

Purpose:	Energy supply to automobiles is handled by complex wiring systems,
often as cable tree structure. Data transmission in automobiles is performed
by different, i.e. additional, conductor systems, such as copper wire,
coaxial- and fibre-cable. Data rates required range from below 100 kbps
(kilobit/second) for  control- and steering functions (all kinds of switch
on/off functions, e.g. for seat, mirror, rear-window-curtain, head-support,
etc.) up to the mbps-level (megabit/second) for multimedia functions such as
GPS, navigation systems (on-board static or dynamic telematics), internet
access, etc..
The cabling for both, energy supply and data transmission, needs space 	and
represents weight.
The project shall provide a selection of functions (non-time critical, i.e.
not relevant for safety), which may be fulfilled by using the existing
electrical supply wiring as data transfer medium. Thus, the space and weight
for this selected class of functions may be saved without loosing
functionality within the automobile. The gained space and weight could thus
be made available for the cabling required to satisfy the strongly
increasing multimedia demand for the automobile of tomorrow.
In addition to space- and weight-saving a standardized automotive cable tree
could represent a major benefit during production (electronic activation of
add-on options; no manual interference)

The partner consortium shall comprise as an initial recommendation
· A potential enduser: an Automotive manufacturer
· A potential electronic parts supplier: a supplier to the automotive industry
· A software house: a developper of communication protocols

Key Action II, Action Line II.2.1.: Workplace Design

Project title:
Intelligent cableless SOHO - Workplace through next generation powerline
communication networking

Objective:	Develop, validate and demonstrate intelligent cableless SOHO -
workplace 		solutions using next generation powerline communication technology

Purpose:	Small Office and Home office (SOHO) workplaces are mostly
stand-alone PC's with a direct connection to dedicated peripherals and to
the Internet via telefone modem.Due to comparably high investments involved
with the installation of an Ethernet and the completely new cabling required
in a SOHO environment, a powerline solution using the existing electrical
wiring (saving the installation effort) is attractive.
		PolyTrax brings a method into the project capable of transferring data
through the powerline at full ISDN speed (up to 150 kbps) under European
regulations, up to 1 mbps elsewhere.
		The scope of the project is the generation of a „cableless SOHO network
demonstrator". Features of this network include Intranet e-mail and file
transfer, access to common peripherals and access to the Internet via
existing telefone line coupled to the local powerline.

Key Action IV, Action Line IV.2.3.: Network integration, interoperability
and interworking

Project title:
Integration of voice&data powerline communication technology
into existing and future Home Automation and SOHO environments

Objective:	Develop, validate and demonstrate the integration of powerline
communication 		technology (PLC) capable of voice&data communication into
network technologies for in-house networking, in particular components for
the interconnectivity and interoperability of PLC and other technologies,
such as switches, routers, modems and associated protocols.

Purpose:Today's most important access media to a home or SOHO environment
are telefone line, TV cable, wireless and powerline. Communication media
inside buildings are newly to be installed  cabling, wireless and powerline.
In order to use available technologies most efficiently for networking in a
given environment, a technology mix needs to be established: Technologies
need to be interconnected and operate together seamlessly. Components for
the seamless interconnectivity of different technologies need to be
developped, such as routers, switches and modems.
The project is targetted towards interconnecting the PolyTrax voice & data
powerline technology to the telefone line (access to the outside of
buildings; Internet), to Ethernet (traditional networks with destinct cables
inside buildings), TV-cable modems (cablelessly connecting TV-access- with
in-house telefone connection point for the return-data-channel) and to
busses of today's and tomorrow's home automation systems.
The connection between today's or tomorrow's (e.g. Jini-based) home
automation systems, which is a connection between non time-critical control-
and steering functions below around 20 kbps data rates (today) and
voice&data communication with data rates of 150 kbps and above (tomorrow) is
crucial for the intelligent, speech-controlled, remotely controlled house of
tomorrow.
The scope of the project is the generation of an „intelligent house
demonstrator" making use of powerline communication and its benefit of „no
new cables, no installation cost&effort" whereever reasonable. Features of
the demonstrator include remote control via telefone, networking via a mix
of PLC, Ethernet, cable-modem and an existing home automation data bus and
(through the deliverables of another IST - project)  Intranet e-mail and
file transfer between PC's, access to common PC-peripherals and access to
the Internet via existing telefone line coupled to the local powerline.
