-------------------------- Project Ideas of FWU --------------------
1. Electronic Distribution of Media
2. Comunication Platform for Learning and Teaching
3. Resource Locator for Schools in Europe
4. MM-base / Navigator

1. Electronic Distribution of Media
Idea: exemplaric distribution of digital videos to schools or training centers.
Problems: standards, payment, copyright protection, pedagogic navigator (an
assistant that navigates the learner or tutor through a media database system)
Mainly looking for partners in media, this could imply joining in with
of broadband modems. FWU would be the practioner for testing the systems
in media centres, schools etc.

2. Communication platform for cooperative learning and teaching
Idea: Developing a system-independent software interface for virtual
learning and teaching, for tele-cooperation in school projects.
System should be capable of multi-media co-production.

3. Multimedia-Base for Training and Learning.
We are interested in developing MM-Base-Systems, i.e. Database systems, where
the contents are MM of various formats: digitised videoclips, slides, graphics,
text, Power Point slides etc., i.e. modules with MM contents.
The problem we would like to solve: How to generate a
p e d a g o g i c a l l y m e a n i n g f u l sequence of modules
that can be used for learning or teaching? The sequence of modules
should follow didactic rules. This means, we need pedagogic parameters
that are attached to the MM modules, in addition to the factual description
of the contents.

---------------------------- What is the FWU? -----------------------------
The FWU (Institut für Film und Bild in Wissenschaft und Unterricht) is
leading producer of media for schools and other educational organisations.
FWU produces 16mm films, videos, slides, educational software and CD-ROMs as
well as internet applications. FWU keeps on stock approximately 2.000 titles
almost all school subjects and cross-area education, as well as fictional
for children and the youth.
All productions are accompanied by comprehensive handbooks for teachers and
educators. Every year 100 new titles are produced.
It is a major objective for the FWU to provide independent information and
consultancy on all pedagogic and technical questions regarding educational
media, both on linear and interactive media concepts and the use of
telecommunication. FWU is engaged in pilot projects on media-pedagogic issues.
Current emphasis lies on dynamic navigation techniques for supporting learning
and teaching as a process.
FWU is co-ordinator of several national projects and programmes and a service
center for public and private institutions.
FWU was founded in 1950 as a non-for-profit corporation, with the 16 German
"Länder" as shareholders.
