Title: Basic Skills Online for learners and for tutors!

Abstract: CTAD has developed a learning surround to deliver and promote the
teaching and learning of basic skills via the internet. It consists of
multimedia assets that can be launched from the cdrom and the rest of the
tracking, communication and management of information can be done on line. In
the UK, basic skills is high on the government agenda since there are 7
million
adults in the UK have basic skills problems. There is a target of ensuring
that
half a million people get upskilled by 2004. This project seeks to write a
business plan to launch the product to the European market and especially in
markets where similar concerns in basic skills problems are shared. At phase
two, it hopes to initially deploy the product to the market. It will add a
creative and innovative dimension to the delivery and learning of basic skills
in Europe since this is an area of learning that is always left out or
delivered in a traditional form and yet if Europe wants to increase its
workforce, it does have to focus on upskilling people in the workforce in this
area.

Please give a brief description of the benefits of the technology, including
key technical or competitive advantages (max. 500 characters)

Description: Target Skills is a learning solution that delivers the
learning of
basic skills (e.g includes literacy, numeracy and English as a second
language)
via the internet. It is a hybrid solution where the multimedia can be
launched
from the cdrom and the rest of the communication and text are online. It
consists of exciting learning objects covering specific areas in literacy and
numeracy in the workplace context. Teachers and learners can access the
information pack remotely. Tutors get to customise learnersí skills profiles
and action plans and assign assignments and communicate online. They also get
to customise modules to suit individual learnerís needs. There will be a
conference area for staff development as well as for the basic skills
learners.

Current Stage of Development: The product is currently mapped to the new UK
basic skills standards. A mapping to a more generic European standard is
needed. There is also plan to support tutors for teaching basic skills online
