PROJECT DESCRIPTION:

The goal of this project is to define common decision procedures and to
develop decision support tools mainly for site selection or location
problems. Location problems may concern the selection of various kinds of
waste disposal sites, sites for potentially dangerous production facilities,
industrial areas, habitation and shopping centers, recreation areas, ...

Finding successful solutions to such problems is crucial in order to promote
a sustainable development. This is due
to the current conflict between industrial, ecological and social aspects.
Since earth only has limited space and resources, promoting one of these
nearly always means taking something away from the others.

Decision procedures concern the interaction between all actors involved.
There should also be a standardized set of selection criteria that are
applicable on an international level (at least inside the European Union).
This is the reason why this project has to involve collaborators from
several countries.

Decision support tools are a part of the decision procedure. These
computer-based decision support methods are destined to simplify and
automise the decision procedures. Case studies from the countries concerned
make it possible to test and compare the performance of these methods.

The project will also focus on how to follow the evolution of societal
preferences, environment and technology through time.
